Sweet Cinnamon Apple pie turnovers

Craving some Apple Pie but don't want to put the work and time into the full thing? Look no further. I have a great alternative for you... and its pretty darn easy too!
Just follow a few simple steps and you will be doing some major impressin' by whipping up these cute little pockets full of sweet cinnamon apple pie.

You can certainly use store bought pie crust, but in my opinion its so cheap and easy to just make it at home. Here is my Granny's delicious pie crust:

RECIPE
1 cup Crisco shortening
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt

cut together with a fork or pastry knife.
Then add 7 tablespoons ice cold water.

mix with a fork until mostly incorporated, then pour the dough onto a floured countertop and quickly knead until blended. The goal is to not knead the dough too much to the point it melts the Crisco. If the Crisco stays in little pockets throughout the dough, it will make the crust much more flaky.
Roll out your dough.
You will want to roll the dough pretty thin so that its flaky and not too thick and overwhelming with the small amount of apple filling.

As far as the filling goes, I decided to try something new. Did you see my recent post on Cinnamon Crockpot Applesauce? That is the filling I used for my turnovers... YEP YOU HEARD ME, APPLESAUCE. I cannot get over how delicious that stuff is. I made sure and used the chunky batch so it worked just perfectly. You could also use canned apple filling if you like!

{Preheat your oven to 375  degrees now}

Ok so once your dough is all rolled out, get a pizza cutter and cut a 5"x5" square.

Don't worry, it doesn't have to be perfect! See mine? :)
Now take a few spoonful's of the apple and add it to the center of the square.

Next, fold the top corner of the square down to its opposite side. Quickly press down the right and left edges with your fingers before the filling seeps out. You can even up your edges if needed.

Now take a fork, and press around the outer edges. This will make a pretty decorative design, as well as insuring that the filling doesn't come out while baking.

Take a sharp knife and make two small "vent" slices on top. Brush with egg wash (1 beaten egg and a little water)  and add to a greased cookie sheet.

Bake for about 25 minutes or until golden on top and the crust looks cooked through and flaky.

Let them cool and enjoy warm or cooled from the refrigerator.

These turnovers can be filled with any kind of filling.... blueberry, strawberry, cherry pie or anything else you come up with. They are so fun for a special breakfast, or a party food.
Hope you enjoy them!
