Homemade Apple Blossoms and my favorite pie dough recipe

I am so excited to share this "sculptural" recipe with you. It is a product of pure experimentation in the kitchen, mixing my passions for baking and artistry. I thought it would be so fun to make something a little different than the traditional turnovers, although we love those too as you can see HERE.

These apple blossoms are so fun to make for a family breakfast or a delicious dessert. This is also a great recipe to make with your kids! If the apple blooms "blossom" open in the oven, no worries that is part of what makes them fun!

 Apple Blossoms
Recipe from Emmy in her Element

1 Batch of my favorite Dough (seen below) OR 1 package pie dough from the grocery store
1 can apple pie filling sliced into small chunks (take two butter knives in different directions to slice apples while still in can or bowl)
1 egg beaten
Turbinado sugar for garnish

Favorite Pie dough
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup Crisco shortening
7-8 tablespoons ice cold water

Preheat oven to 375 Degrees F.
{See pictures below for visual learning!}
Cut shortening, flour and salt together with a fork or pastry knife until pea sized and crumbly. Add 7-8 tablespoons of ice cold water to the center of the mix. Slowly mix with a fork until dough is mostly incorporated. Dump dough onto a floured counter top and knead 2-3 times to smooth slightly. Do not over knead. Rub your rolling pin with flour and roll dough to about 1/4 inch in thickness.
1.Take a flower shaped cookie cutter at least 5 inches in diameter and start cutting flower shapes out of your dough.
2.Take a small knife and make slices to the base of the petals.
3.Place about a tablespoon or two of apple filling in the center of the flower.
4.Brush dough with beaten egg and start folding petals up around the filling. The egg wash will act as a glue to help hold the blossom together.
5.Now that blossom is folded, brush the outside of the blossom with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar.

Place blossoms on a cookie sheet lined with tin foil and sprayed with pam cooking spray.
Bake at 375 degrees F for about 20 minutes or until golden brown crust appears.

    1. After much searching I found an Etsy seller CookieCrumbleKid who makes cutters 3”-8” and you choose from 3-10 petals!
